(1) Tamron 150-600 or (2) the Canon 70-200 2.8 II + Canon Extender EF 2X III. Obviously, buying the extender would be a lot cheaper and lighter than carrying around another heavy zoom. The Tamron would give me a little more reach, albeit the reviews say it's quite soft above 500mm. Still a little more reach vs. 400mm.

2. Hi ajamils, My SIGMA 60-600 mm f/4.5-6.4 is a really cool lens, used with my EOS R, it's produces very sharp images, even at 600 mm, very good for compressed landscape photography, wildlife, close-up nature and sports. IMHO, it is more versatile than the 150-600 C.

The only third party superzoom I've found to work well is the Sigma 60-600 Sports (haven't personally tried the 150-600 Sports, although I've heard it works well). It's heavy, but it's got a huge range, has more reach than the 100-500, and does it with a larger aperture. I got my used copy on eBay for about $1600.

Its handheld stabilization is simply amazing. Ive been told the Canon 100-400 II is sharper and has wider apertures throughout the range.
The new 2X TC III works very well for me on the 500. Attached is a sample image from the 7D MK II using the Canon 500L f/4 II + Canon 2X TC III. Shot wide open @ f/8, uncropped. I have tons more from a trip to Arizona last week. The only restriction with the 2X TC III is the lack of autofocus on lenses slower than f/4.
